Why has history chosen to overlook so much of the human side is WWII? My mother discouraged me from reading ‘The Diary is Anne Frank’- she had been a RN in Northern Africa during WWII and did not understand why anyone would want to read something so horrendous.I think this book should be required reading for all high schoolers. The side of humanity that is presented is bone chilling. The story is so well written and we do need to be aware of how easily our freedom can be compromised. I love the novels set in the Channel Islands and this book makes the point that not all Germans were Nazis-being in the wrong place at the wrong time anyone can be swept into evil that exists. I really liked the setting: the German occupation of the Channel Islands. I am endlessly fascinated about WWII , and I have read many books on that subject - including one on by another author set in the Channel Islands during the German occupation . It had the same title.Then, of course there was the film "Island at War", set during the German Occupation of the Channel Islands.Both books titled "The Girl from the Island" were shamelessly plagiarizing the story in the film.That was disappointing. What was unforgivable was the author's inability to use the objective case. I made corrections for the first couple of instances, but after that I just gave up !!
